Aspen Class (years 3 and 4)
A message from the class teacher, Mr Whitnell.
As we are back into the swing of the school year, Aspen class are settling nicely into a rhythm of learning. It feels like the class have been together for longer, and it is hard to imagine the classroom without Mrs Friday!
Our class topic for this term continues to be Stone Age to Iron Age. This term concludes our foray into the Stone Age, and then takes us crashing through the Bronze Age, and then the Iron Age. Some of the areas we will explore together will be Bronze Age burials and Iron Age forts, capped off by a trip to Kent Life for a Stone Age Day, which will bring together all the learning children have been doing so far.
In English, we will be delving into Ug: Boy Genius of the Stone Age. As with Term 1, the children will plan, draft and perfect their own writing ideas, yet this term they will have the chance to write a diary entry in role, instructions for a Prehistoric hunter, and a recount of their busy day at Kent Life.
In Maths this term, the children will move into addition and subtraction, and will develop written methods as well as mental methods. There will be many opportunities to apply their skills to problem-solving and reasoning activities, as they become more confident. I am very pleased with how the children are approaching their learning of times tables, and as they increase speed and accuracy this really enables them in their everyday Maths learning.
In Science this term, Magnets and Forces are the focus. Through a series of hands-on experiments, children will explore poles on magnets, and types of magnets used in our world, as well as the way forces such as friction affect the world around us. The children will develop their skills in setting up experiments, and making predictions and recording results. I have been delighted with the way all children have embraced the experiments so far this year, and some of the scientific observations have been fantastic!
Accelerated Reader has already brought many successes in Aspen for our readers – Children have been reading and quizzing to earn points and reach their targets. Children choose books with their own range and can read these at home in addition to the daily reading time we have in class. As children get used to the system, it is great to see the children enjoying their reading and testing themselves.
Mrs Friday and I will always do our best to be available to talk if you would like to catch us at the end of the day, or alternatively please do not hesitate to book an appointment via the office.
